Chapter Analysis

What was the advice given to Nick by his father? How, do you suppose, this makes him a good person to tell this story?

Nick was told by his father “whenever you feel like criticising anyone , just remember that all the people in this world haven’t has the advantages that you’ve had.”  This makes him a good person to tell this story as it makes him less judgemental than other people. Also Nick can not tell what other people are thinking so it is coming truly from his perspective.

How is West Egg different from East Egg? Which do you think you would rather live in and why?

West egg is where people have made their own money which is known as the side of new money, while East egg is where people have been brought up with money in their life, so have inherited or married into the money. I would rather life in East egg and inherit the money. This being because in that day and age women were worthless and not valued while the men dominated. It was harder for the women to make their own money so being born into it would make life easier.

If you were going to pick one colour to connect with Daisy Buchanan, what colour would it be? Explain your reasoning.

My one colour i would connect with daisy would be white. White seems to be the one colour she wears most if the time. When i think of white it makes me think about how white isn’t actually a colour, it is also very bland and boring. This could lead to the personality of Daisy Buchanan. Daisy life is very boring she doesn’t seem to do much for herself as the man always does everything in this day and age. White could indicate that her life is missing that one thing.

We find out that Tom has “some woman in New York.” What unflattering feature of Jordan Baker’s personality is revealed in this scene?

The green light that Gatsby is staring at will become an important symbol in the book. What symbolic associations do you connect to the colour green?
