Introduction:

“Some people are living the illusion of others instead of living the truth of themselves.” The famous novel “The Great Gatsby” written by F Scott Fitzgerald explores the story of a summer in the 1920. It is unfolded by three main charters Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.

Body 1:

Statement: Throughout the novel, Nick Caraway teaches us that you can never truly hide from your true self. 

Explanation: Nick presents himself as a honest and trustworthy person as at the start of the book he tells us that he sticks to his morals and the advice that his dad gave him, when in reality he judges everyone except Gatsby. People are judgemental naturally and as the story is told by Nick he is insterally going to have his own opinion on everything that happens.

Example: Nicks dad had said that “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had” to Nick hoping that this would stay in Nicks mind anytime he did feel like being a judgemental person . Nick claimed that he was ”one of the few honest people that I have ever known” ignoring anything else he may have said that could be considered judgemental. 

Explanation: These were classifiled as Nicks Morals and he has thought that whatever happened he would go back on these. Nick claims that he kept to his morals right to the end but in reality this was untrue. Nick has to be judgmental, its a normal thing that people do and as he was telling the story, the story was unfolded though they way he saw it. 

Example: Nick says rude things though out the whole book contradicting himself as being a non judgemental person. Nick has said that “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy…” the kind of people that “smashed up things and creatures”. and continues to say that they “retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together”.

Explanation: Nick becomes so fixated on other peoples lives when he said he would never be like this.

Your Thinking: Fitzgerald uses Nick to show that you can not hide himself to who he really is. He can never be the person he wants to be. The illusion is used to show us also that everyone is not who they say they are, making us aware of the people around us.
