Throughout the novel, The valley of ashes teaches us that even though you may work hard, it doesn’t mean that you will get where you want to be.
The valley of ashes Sits between the eggs and New York City. It shows us that the characters who live there work hard all day and never seem to go anywhere. They just stay working there without moving up classes. The Valley Of Ashes makes us realise that The American Dream is not in reach. The people that live there believe very much in the American DReam and strive for it everyday, just waiting for something that will never come.
When nick first encounters the valley of ashes, he describes it as “a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens” and goes further into detail saying it is “where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke”
